Revolutionary Lap Pak device could save healthcare system $3 billion annually

Columbia, MD December 2, 2013: Seguro Surgical, Inc. (“Seguro”) announced today that the rights to its novel surgical device, Lap Pak, have been acquired by The OR Company of Tacoma, WA. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Seguro, based in Columbia, MD, licensed the Lap Pak technology from Johns Hopkins University in 2009 and further developed the device with support from a grant from the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (“TEDCO”).

Lap Pak is designed to replace the use of cotton towels to pack and secure the bowels during major open abdominal surgeries. Lap Pak is designed to reduce post-operative adhesions caused by the use of cotton towels, which cost the healthcare system $3 billion annually. The technology also saves significant OR time - approximately $1,000 savings per procedure.

Tony Deasey, CEO of Seguro, commented, “The success of Lap Pak to date has been a testament to the power of collaboration between innovative Maryland organizations like Johns Hopkins and TEDCO. With The OR Company’s worldwide distribution capabilities, Lap Pak can now improve patient safety on a global scale.”

SEGURO ACQUIRES WORLDWIDE RIGHTS TO JOHNS HOPKINS ABDOMINAL SURGERY DEVICE

Columbia, MD - October 19, 2009 - Seguro Surgical, Inc., a medical device development company specializing in the commercialization of surgical instrumentation, today announced that it has acquired, from The Johns Hopkins University, the global marketing rights to a novel device for use in abdominal surgery.

Over two million abdominal surgeries (laparotomies) are performed annually in the United States. Current practice utilizes cotton towels or sponges to reposition the bowel and allow access to the surgical area. This procedure is time consuming, presents potential safety risks to patients and can lead to post-operative complications. Seguro’s “Lap-Pak” device is a flexible, one–piece, device contoured to enable the rapid and secure re-positioning of the bowels to expose the surgical site.

The device was developed by surgeons and biomedical engineering students from the BME undergraduate design course at Johns Hopkins under the leadership of Robert E. Bristow, M.D., M.B.A., Professor, Director, Kelly Gynecological Oncology Service and Director, Johns Hopkins Ovarian Cancer Center of Excellence.

Anthony Deasey, President and Chief Executive Officer of Seguro, stated, “We believe that this elegantly simple device will improve the overall efficiency of laparotomies and generate substantial reductions in overall healthcare costs. We are very excited to be working with Johns Hopkins and hope that this will be the first of many collaborative ventures that we undertake together.”

Seguro is a portfolio company of FirstStage Bioventures LLC, an investment company which creates value through the licensing, development and ultimate sale of early stage medical technologies. For more information see the company’s website at www.segurosurgical.com.
