Inventor and continuous improver of the "Bookwalter Retractor"

Dr. Bookwalter is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, The New England Vascular Society, and The New England Surgical Society. Widely recognized as an innovator in the field of modern surgery, Dr. Bookwalter is best known for inventing the "Bookwalter Retractor", the most commonly used table fixed surgical retractor in use today. The “Bookwalter Retractor” was sold to Codman & Shurtleff, a division of Johnson & Johnson, who currently markets the device.

Dr. Bookwalter was born and raised in Columbiana, Ohio. His mother was a nurse and his father and grandfather were physicians. After medical school and residency he spent two years as a Major in the Army Medical Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He returned to the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston for a final year of cardiothoracic surgery and then moved to Brattleboro, Vermont, where he has practiced surgery since 1973. Subsequently, he rejoined the Army Reserves, ultimately achieving the rank of full Colonel. Dr. Bookwalter is noted for his "humanistic" approach to patient care and his lifelong interest in disease prevention.

Dr. Bookwalter attended Amherst College and Harvard Medical School, followed by six years of surgical residency on The Harvard (Fifth) Surgical Service at the Boston City Hospital.

Dr. John Harmon is a senior surgeon with extensive experience dealing with a wide variety of surgical problems. Prior to being appointed Professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins, he was an Army surgeon stationed at Walter Reed, and then Chief of Surgery at the Washington VA Medical Center. A general surgeon with a wide-ranging practice including a variety of complex clinical problems, Harmon specializes in the management of complex hernias and wounds.

Dr. Harmon earned a medical degree at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York and received surgical training at the Harvard University Medical School.

Antonio Santillan-Gomez, M.D., MBA, FACOG | Gynecologic Oncoogist

Dr. Santillan’s specializes in the care of patients with gynecologic malignancies. His areas of expertise include minimally-invasive, robot-assisted surgery for complicated pelvic and abdominal surgery, targeted and personalized chemotherapy and clinical trial research.

He is the co-author of multiple peer-reviewed articles in medical journals, book chapters, and abstracts and presentations. While at Johns Hopkins University, he was the principle inventor of the platform technology for Seguro Surgical’s Lap Pak.

Dr. Santillan earned a medical degree at Escueia de Medicina, ITESM, in Monterrey, Mexico. He did his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Oklahoma and a fellowship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Gynecology Oncology. After training he was at Texas Tech University School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor. Currently he practice at Cancer Care Centers of South Texas (US Oncology) at San Antonio Texas.

Dr. Santillan is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a Member of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society, and a Candidate Member of the Society of Gynecology Oncology.
